Nothing is more delicious than a bite of a warm glazed donut that melts in your mouth just before you take that first sip of your morning coffee. But have you ever wondered where the idea of a donut came from?
The origins of donuts can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Greeks and Romans enjoyed fried dough sweetened with honey. However, the modern donut, as we know it, began to take shape in the 19th century. One of the earliest references to something resembling a donut appeared in 1809 when American writer Washington Irving mentioned "doughnuts" in his work, "A History of New York."
In the United States, donuts began to gain popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first dedicated donut shop, "Krispy Kreme," was established in 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, followed by iconic chains like Dunkin' Donuts in 1950. These establishments played a crucial role in popularizing donuts, offering a variety of flavors and styles, and making them a staple of American breakfast culture.
Here are some of our favorite local donut shops, each offering a unique spin on these delicious treats.

Ray's Donuts:
In addition to the amazing selection of donuts, this eatery offers a lovely menu of breakfast sandwiches. So, if you are looking for a great place to enjoy a simple sandwich, a cup of coffee, and a sweet treat, Ray's is the place to find it all. But you had better get there before they sell out because once they are done for the day, this place is locked up tight.

Sarah Donut:
Sarah's is another one on our list of donut places to checkout. With an upbeat interior and seven stores across the area, Sarah's is the perfect place to stop and grab your favorite treats to go. Their Lawrenceville location celebrated its grand opening on January 18th, 2025. With the hard work of Asian-American culture behind this brand, we know you are going to love their artistic creations as much as we do.

Too Mini Donuts:
Owned and inspired by April, this shop known for its mini donuts started as a food truck before moving to a storefront in the Publix shopping center on Sugarloaf Pkwy. The rose wall and pink decor make the perfect backdrop for a girlfriend's gathering. April's welcoming demeanor and warm smile make you want to pull out one of her cute pink chairs and spend the morning reading a book or doing a project on your laptop.
April ensures that all of her treats are calorie-free, so even if you are watching your waistline, you can still come and enjoy them. Well, maybe calorie-free is pushing it a bit, but you can still enjoy them almost guilt-free due to the mini size.
No matter which place you choose, here in our community, we know you will love what you find on your next tasty adventure discovering Lawrenceville's best donut shops.
